A UK degree is what opens the Graduate visa, the usual first step to a London scheme. It lasts 2 years for applications made on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027.
Graduate schemes recruit a year or more before the start date. Note the firms on this page now, then shortlist the rest of your field with the shortlist worksheet once your course begins.
If your degree is from a university on the High Potential Individual list and was awarded in the last 5 years, you may be able to work in London on an HPI visa. It lasts 2 years, and gov.uk adds: An HPI visa can only be applied for once.
Use that time to land a sponsor: to stay on, you will need a firm that sponsors a Skilled Worker visa before your HPI visa ends. Before you send a London application, read about turning a US resume into a UK CV (opens getajobintheuk.com).
From gov.uk: The HPI visa cannot be extended. Holders may switch to another visa, for example Skilled Worker, before the HPI visa expires.
On a Graduate visa, the next step is a sponsored job, and you can take it without leaving the UK. gov.uk puts it this way: The Graduate visa cannot be extended. Holders may switch to a Skilled Worker visa from inside the UK and may qualify for the new-entrant rate.
Ask each firm one clear question before the first interview, with the recruiter script. When a form asks whether you need sponsorship, answer it truthfully with the form question script.

No. gov.uk says UK universities are not eligible for HPI. A UK graduate qualifies only through a separate degree from a listed university outside the UK.
